Ah, the finale of the weekend… DEMF, Or Movement, Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival. It was nothing short of a spectacular finish to an awesome three days, and all I can say is… wow!
Arrived, as usual, late, around 4:00 and made our way over to Agoria at the Vitamin Water Stage. Strong beats and a wicked deep house tracks filled the air, and had a lively energy to them. He made a strong performance, and was able to captivate the crowd that danced in the rain.
But, the real bread and butter came later at the Red Bull stage when Simian Mobile Disco dropped a DJ set. The energy was strong, the crowd was rocking, and the tracks were a pulsar of energy and emotion. Definitely an artist worth checking out, SMD really caught my attention with their trippy Detroit Techno set, living up to their status quo. Great suggestion from a friend, and really looking forward to checking out further material from their grab bag of goodies.
The last show I caught for the night was Pretty Lights, and it was definitely a change up from the great quantities of Detroit Techno that was rocking out the stages. His Dub-Step set really had the people banging their heads to the beat, and his melodic approach that tweaked the speakers had the crowd reaching for the sky. A really amazing experience overall, and wish I could’ve stayed for the closers, but three days of Festival is hard to keep up with.
If you got this far, thanks for the read, and leave feedback of your own experiences!
Late start to Movement today, a lot of running around and preparing and waiting for girls to get dressed…
Nonetheless, was able to check out a few choice sets. DJ Sneak at the Vitamin Water really brought the power and energy necessary to work the crowd. Most of the day was traveling between multiple venues and back, and was stressful on the knees.
Vain packed a punch with awesome sets by Ryan Christopher, Kenneth Thomas and Funk Agenda. Really pumping bass, and overall a very awesome experience. Check out for tomorrows last and greatest installment, as I look forward to Simian Mobile Disco among a few choice others.
Friday, Movement’s pre-party at Vain Ultra Lounge in Downtown Detroit. Crystal Method rocked the house! High energy, awesome breaks and dance beats, overall, a great experience, save the super expensive drinks. $9 for a mixed drink was a little steep, for my interests, but the long island packed a powerful punch. Overall, a good night.
Saturday, a great opening day to Movement this year! A lot of solid acts played, including Acquaviva and Kenneth Thomas. I was more or less disappointed with Plastikman’s performance; perhaps I’m not a fan of immensely overpowering 16khz tones, or the minimalistic approach to his music. Lots of people, great turnout. Vain, didn’t make it to, but we shall see how tonight goes.
Let the Festival begin!

So, here I am, at GDC, taking it all in, breathing in the experience. For my first GDC, this has truly been one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and I must say that I can’t wait to attend next year. Continue reading »
